Passed Down paint study.jpg

This painting reimagines the final moments of Hypatia, the renowned philosopher and teacher of Alexandria, whose life ended in a violent public confrontation. Set within a grand architectural space reminiscent of a classical forum or hall, the composition draws on the visual language of historical narrative painting—dramatic lighting, staged figures, and a crowd that serves as witness to the unfolding event.

At the center, Hypatia stands elevated in a flowing yellow dress, composed yet resolute, while a man seated below (Orestes) gestures upward in conversation. Behind them, a gathering crowd begins to stir, their movement hinting at the rising tension and zealously that erupted in Hypatia’s time.

By blending contemporary figures and dress with the compositional structure of classical history painting, the work bridges past and present. It reflects on how the story of Hypatia—once told through ancient texts—continues to echo through modern imagery, reminding viewers of the fragile boundary between reason, power, and public judgment.

Passed Down is a scene painting of the ancient philosopher and astronomer Hypatia giving a lecture to her students in the halls of the Library of Alexandria. They sit and stand there comfortably in mid discourse, unaware of the approaching angry mob. The tonal aspect of the painting is warm, provided by strong rays of light filling the back of the library’s halls, which illuminate the encroaching chaos. While the setting remains from antiquity, the figures in the painting are modern and current, helping the viewers peek into the historical scene and adapt it, feel it.

This historical painting reflects on the double-sided nature of knowledge and how it is passed down from generation to generation. Hypatia was one of the last to see the great halls of Alexandria as they were until it’s destruction by an angry mob. The same angry mob who tried and burned Hypatia to the steak as a witch.

Passed Down is an oil painting that presents a quiet yet tense moment unfolding within a grand architectural interior. A woman in a flowing yellow dress stands elevated on a small step, her posture calm but authoritative as she gestures downward.
